Our current campaigns:
#ReleaseRiverside
The #ReleaseRiverside campaign was birthed in April after a month of advocating for early release and responsible re-entry of people locked up in the Riverside County jail system. The mission of #ReleaseRiverside is to see sustainable solutions that lead to systemic change in Riverside and the liberation of people in this county. This county has a long history of racism and violence, from the use of the death penalty to the over-representation of Black people locked up. We know that prisons are not the solution both before COVID and after, and we want to see Riverside put community over the carceral system. To learn more, visit bit.ly/releaseriverside
Free The Vote ACA 6:
SOI is a proud co-sponsor of this Assembly Constitutional Amendment through participation in a coalition effort led by Legal Services for Prisoners with Children. ACA 6 will ask California voters to restore the right to vote to people on parole in the 2020 ballot. Why is restoring the right to vote for people on parole important? Although they are contributing to their community through taxes and being engaged with their community, people with felony charges are silenced through felony disenfranchisement. The right to vote allows us to participate in the democratic decision-making process and have a say in who represents us. Without the right to vote, people on parole are unable to have real representation and be civically engaged. Shutting people out of their right to vote and silencing their voices can be seen as an additional sentence to be served on top of the time already done inside. Elected officials cannot morally ask people to pay their taxes but exclude them from making the decisions about where their tax dollars go to. To learn more, visit freethevote2020.org.
In-Person Visitation:
The In-Person Visitation campaign advocates to restore, implement, and preserve the right to in-person visitation for incarcerated people and their families. Across the country, telecommunications companies like Global Tel Link and Securus have worked to eliminate in-person visitation replacing it with video calls in jails. These video calls further separate the already strained relationships between people behind bars and their loved ones. Imagine only being able to connect with the people you love through facetime. Additionally, these calls are very expensive, forcing families in poverty to choose between staying in contact with their loved ones or paying the bills.
